Watermarking vs fingerprinting
Fingerprinting recognises a recording that already exists, without changing it. Watermarking — what an Audio Link uses — adds a small identity to the sound, so each version and channel can carry its own.
Side by side
| Aspect | Audio Link | Audio fingerprinting |
|---|---|---|
| Changes the audio | Yes, adds an identity designed to be imperceptible | No |
| Tells versions apart | Yes, each variant has its own identity | Only if they sound different |
| Works on audio you can't re-encode | No | Yes, if it is in the reference database |
| Change the destination | Yes, without new audio | Depends on the service |
| Best for | Campaigns, attribution, interactive moments | Monitoring and recognition |
Honest limits
SonarTag focuses on watermarking. Fingerprinting may come later as a separate recognition mode for audio you can't re-encode.
